DRI supplied EcoFresh Energy Recovery Wheels for Edmonton Remand Centre

Built in 1979, the original Edmonton Remand Centre was a 734-bed facility accommodating adult male and female inmates. The newer, larger facility will be able to hold up to 2,000 inmates on a site that is roughly the size of 20 CFL football fields. The fast-track project began in 2007 and is scheduled to open in October 2012.

A new look

The new Remand Centre will look like a modern low-rise office building. Enclosed exercise yards and exterior lighting that is directed toward the facility will minimize the impact on the neighborhood.

The project is aiming for LEED Silver certification, as well as contributing to the surrounding area in terms of its environmental impact.

Fresh Air HVAC System in the new facility

DRI has supplied its EcoFresh Energy Recovery Wheels to the building to optimize energy performance of the air conditioning systems which would result into:

  • considerable reduction in installed tonnage
  • reduction in utility bills for entire life cycle
  • enhanced Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
  • and reduced health risks

DRI is the largest producer of Enthalpy wheels. DRI Ecofresh Energy Wheel is desiccant Molecular Sieve 3Å coated used on aluminium substrate. This limits the cross contamination to absolute minimum and ensures exclusion of the contaminants in the air streams, while transferring water vapour molecules.

As a supplier of Energy Recovery Wheels at Beijing Olympics 2008 indoor sporting venues, Desiccant Rotors International . ..DRI, the largest manufacturer of Energy Recovery Equipment in India also got an opportunity to participate in XIX Common Wealth Games. DRI has supplied several Energy Recovery Wheels to maintain healthy Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) to leading Air-Conditioning Companies in the country who have executed various stadium projects.

DRI has installed Heat Recovery Wheels (HRWs) and Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVi) to recover energy and to improve the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) of all the indoor stadiums. DRI’s equipment have been installed in the following air conditioned stadiums:

The University of the South Sewanee's, USA maintains IAQ with DRI EcoFresh.

The University of the South's newest building, Spencer Hall, is finally open to the public after five years of design and construction. It now houses the school's chemistry and biology departments as well as the Landscape Analysis Lab. Named after William Spencer, a member of the class of 1941 who donated $6 million to fund a new science building Spencer Hall is a $22 million addition to the older Woods Lab.

Spencer Hall aims to be LEED certified to the Silver level, and several of its "green" features include large amounts of natural light coming in through its many windows and many new energy efficient technologies.

Sustainable building practices and technology are incorporated into Spencer Hall, including improved Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), energy conservation and heat recovery technology, and the use and re-use of local materials.DRI has supplied its EcoFresh Heat Recovery Wheels (HRWs) to the building to optimize energy performance of the air conditioning systems resulting in:

Recognizing the need for maintaining IAQ in the class rooms, the project consultant specified Ecofresh ERVs (Energy Recovery Ventilators) to be installed in every classroom. We have already shipped out and installed RO noc ERVs to Hong Kong.

Why is lAQ important in School?
Indoor Air problems can be subtle and do not always produce easily immediately recognized impact on health or well-being of people.
 
Children are especially susceptible to long term effects from air pollution. Therefore, air quality in schools is of particular concern. Proper maintenance of indoor air is more than a "quality" issue; it includes safety and good management of our investment in the students, staff, and facilities.

 

IT Complexes mushroom as Software booms!

With the software boom, IT complexes are mushrooming to provide the software developers the "best quality work environ'. These "state-of-the-art" complexes are totally air conditioned. Software Professionals spend most of their lives inside these conditioned "quality" spaces While these spaces are comfortable, the may not be completely healthy. The Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in a conditioned space is generally poor, as not enough importance is given to ventilation.

The closed and conditioned "in''vironmen of such complexes provide the perfect environment for growth of microscopic airborne contaminants responsible for poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).

Air in Conditioned Spaces can be more Polluted than outdoor air. Airconditioning is a major factor affecting Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). Majority of airconditioning systems are designed with very little or almost no provision for fresh air, as fresh air means, more kilowatts of conditioning and thus higher energy cost.

Inadequate ventilation, coupled with re-circulation of stale , results in poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), due to a buildup pf pollutants like cigarette smoke, carbon-dioxide, mold, bacteria, viruses and potentially dangerous chemical emitted from copying machines, furniture, carpets and paint.

The high concentration of pollutants in indoor conditioned space causes a phenomenon known as the "Sick Building Syndrome" (SBS). SBS is a cluster of complex symptoms that include irritation of the eyes, blocked nose and throat, headaches, dizziness, lethargy, fatigue, irritation, wheezing, sinus, congestion, dry skin rash and nausea.

These symptoms are generally work related, that is, they begin shortly after the person enters the building disappear within a few hours, after he leaves it. A more and long term effect on health may arise due to a continued exposure and lead to "Building Related Illness (BRI)".

The solution to Pollution is Dilution

Increased ventilation results in improved indoor environment but adds to the first and operating cost of airconditioning systems.

Proper balance between energy efficiency and ventilation of acceptable Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) has thus, become a critical problem for designers as well as building owners,operators and maintenance personnel.

DRI supplied Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) at IMISCollege, Bhubneshwar.
