Nowhere, is the importance of
IAQ as critical as in hospitals and health care facilities.
Continual advances in medicine and technology necessitate
the air-conditioning of hospitals and medical facilities.
In many cases, proper airconditioning is a factor
in patient therapy.
In some instances, it is the
major treatment. However the relative high cost of
air conditioning has led to inadequate and improperly
designed systems, with not enough care to factor in
specific requirements for ventilation, filtration
and cross contamination.
ENERGY MANAGEMENT IN HOSPITALS
AND IAQ WITH ENERGY/HEAT WHEELS
Higher fresh air ventilation
needs translate into higher outdoor air changes per
hour, which means more conditioning loads and higher
capacity plants to be installed. This leads to higher
first cost and higher operating costs.
Hospitals operate 24 hours a day year round, requir
sophisticated backup systems in case of utility shutdowns
and use large quantities of outdoor air to combat
odors and dilute micro-organisms.
Hence, effective rnanagement
of energy systems becomes imperative. Increasing ventilation
rates translates into two ways - An improved indoor
environment and significant higher utility bills for
the owners.
The solution Is the use of energy
recovery devices of which the energy/ heat wheel is
the most appropriate.
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS
OF THE ECO-FRESH WHEEL FOR HOSPITAL APPLICATION
The Eco-Fresh energy wheels have
a coating which provides selective adsorption and
eliminates cross contamination of bacteria and airborne
contaminants.
In hospitals, clean rooms and
animal houses where stringent control of IAQ is desired,
these wheels provide the best options.
The ECO-Fresh Heat Wheel uses
custom-made metallic honey comb matrix coated with
a special grade desiccant 'EcoSorb 300' adsorption
material. Pore opening is so structured that substantially
particulate near the water molecules size of 2.8 Å
are condensed and trapped given up. Larger pollutants
(say over 4 Å) are excluded.
Eco-Fresh provides strict separation of the airflows,
preventing carry-over of bacteria and dust particles
from the exhaust air side to the supply side.
As a result, the contaminants remain in the exhaust
air stream. In-built purge sector flushes out the
flutes before they enter the supply air side and eliminates
cross contamination.
The
Tower, Dubai, UAE
The Tower, one of Dubai's new commercial complexes was able
to reduce it's air-conditioning tonnage by 1000 tons and remove
a chilling plant by installing Ecofresh Heat Recovery Wheels
. The project handled by UTS Carrier involved installation
of Ecofresh Heat Wheels Model 2400 and 2200 4 nos. each along
with 1 no. HRW. 1300. UTS Carrier has incorporated many ECOFRESH
Wheels in it's various prestigious projects in UAE, e.g. Sharjah
Mega mall, Fujairah Resort, TABREED 2,3 & 20 and many
more to ensure a good IAQ as well as energy saving in the
buildings handled by them.
OBI
Shopping Center(s), Wuxi and Shanghai, China
The Shoppers and workers of OBI Shopping Centers in Wuxi and
Shanghai, China, have the benefit of breathing a better quality
of conditioned air while they shop and work in the center
and thus lead a healthier life. The requirement of over 160,000
cmh of fresh air to save energy as well as maintain IAQ (Indoor
Air Quality) at the three shopping Centers (one at Wuxi and
two at Shanghai) was met by installing 5 nos. Ecofresh Heat
Wheels models HRW 1500 (4 nos.) HRW 1300 (1 no.) and HRW 1200
(10 nos.) with the McQuay AHUs.
Adarsh Shopping
Center, Bangalore, India
Adarsh Shopping center, located at
the up-market downtown area of India's Silicon Valley, Bangalore
opted for the Ecofresh Treated Fresh Air Units to provide
a better quality of conditioned air to its shoppers and
workers. The totally air-conditioned, multistory, shopping
complex has installed 8 nos. of Treated Fresh Air Units
(TFAs) models FLE 90 (4 nos.) FLE-150 (2 nos.) and FLE 300
(2 nos.). The TFAs have the Ecofresh Heat Wheels incorporated
as a part of its standard options.
ENVIRONMENTAL
CONTROL IN INDOOR SWIMMING POOLS
Indoor swimming pools, are also
afflicted by the humidity menace, which is not unexpected
with all 'that water around'.
Actually, both temperature and
humidity levels need regulating/controlling in indoor
swimming pools.
As indoor pbols are normally
airconditioned, chlorine laden humidity tends to damage
most ventilating equipment as well as cause discomfort
to the user.
Another problem is the temperature
variation outside. Both factors tend to overload the
airconditioning system and increase energy utilization.
However, our sensible heat wheel,
used in conjunction with our dehumidifier provides
a simple cost-effective and energy efficient solution.
The sensible wheel regulates the temperature using
energy exhausted by the airconditioning system while
the dehumidifier controls the humidity.
Shenyang Huafa Indoor Water Amusement
Park, China
The Shenyang Huafa Indoor Water Amusement Park, is billed to
be one of the biggest amusement parks of its kind in China.
To provide good Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) to the tourists, holiday
makers and its own workers, the Shenyang Huafa project needed
over 260,000 cmh of fresh air to be treated as the whole park
is air conditioned. Thus, in order to save energy as well as
maintain Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), 14 nos. Ecofresh Sensible
Heat Recovery Wheels, HRW-1900s-7 units, HRW-1700s-1 unit, HRW-1500s-1
unit are being installed with York AHUs to treat fresh air flow
of 2,60,000 cmh.
Sham Shiu Po Primary School,
Kowloon, Hong Kong is totally airconditioned.
Recognizing the need for maintaining IAQ in the
class rooms, the project consultant specified Ecofresh
ERVs (Energy Recovery Ventilators) to be installed
in every classroom. We have already shipped out and
installed RO noc ERVs to Hong Kong.
Why is lAQ important in School?
Indoor Air problems can be subtle and do not always
produce easily immediately recognized impact on health
or well-being of people.
Children are especially susceptible
to long term effects from air pollution. Therefore, air
quality in schools is of particular concern. Proper maintenance
of indoor air is more than a "quality" issue;
it includes safety and good management of our investment
in the students, staff, and facilities.
IT
Complexes mushroom as Software booms!
With the software boom, IT complexes
are mushrooming to provide the software developers the
"best quality work environ'. These "state-of-the-art"
complexes are totally air conditioned. Software Professionals
spend most of their lives inside these conditioned "quality"
spaces While these spaces are comfortable, the may not
be completely healthy. The Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
in a conditioned space is generally poor, as not enough
importance is given to ventilation.
The closed and conditioned "in''vironmen
of such complexes provide the perfect environment for
growth of microscopic airborne contaminants responsible
for poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).
Indoor air problems can be subtle
and do not always produce easily recognized impacts
on health and the well being of people.
Air in Conditioned Spaces can be
more Polluted than outdoor air. Airconditioning is a
major factor affecting Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). Majority
of airconditioning systems are designed with very little
or almost no provision for fresh air, as fresh air means,
more kilowatts of conditioning and thus higher energy
cost.
Inadequate ventilation, coupled with re-circulation
of stale , results in poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ),
due to a buildup pf pollutants like cigarette smoke,
carbon-dioxide, mold, bacteria, viruses and potentially
dangerous chemical emitted from copying machines, furniture,
carpets and paint.
The high concentration of pollutants in indoor conditioned
space causes a phenomenon known as the "Sick Building
Syndrome" (SBS). SBS is a cluster of complex symptoms
that include irritation of the eyes, blocked nose and
throat, headaches, dizziness, lethargy, fatigue, irritation,
wheezing, sinus, congestion, dry skin rash and nausea.
These symptoms are generally work
related, that is, they begin shortly after the person
enters the building disappear within a few hours, after
he leaves it. A more and long term effect on health
may arise due to a continued exposure and lead to "Building
Related Illness (BRI)".
The solution to Pollution is Dilution
Increased ventilation results in
improved indoor environment but adds to the first and
operating cost of airconditioning systems.
Proper balance between energy efficiency
and ventilation of acceptable Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
has thus, become a critical problem for designers as
well as building owners, operators and maintenance personnel.
opts for fresh air with
in its tableting area
Cadilla is in the process of
installing 11 nos. Treated Fresh Air units incorporating
Eco-Fresh Heat Wheels to " treat " fresh
air in its tableting and other formulation areas.
Tableting and formulation areas
of pharma plants need large quantities of " conditioned
" fresh air to be brought in for ventilation
as well as process needs.
This fresh air needs to be conditioned
to maintain comfort levels of temperature and humidity
in the area. Condil'oning such large volumes of air
entails very high energy cost.
Eco-Fresh Treated Fresh Air (TFA) Units incorporating
heal wheels precondition the fresh air . . .
By using energy from the
exhaust air, thus bringing the energy needs down considerabiy.
For acceptable IAQ, humidity and temperature
control, energy conservation / efficiency and in the
process reducing the space envelope.
It has two separate airflow which ensures that
the exhaust and supply air stream is total!y separate
and there is no cross contamination or leakage.
PCB Screeninq
Area
PCB (printed circuit boards) manufacturing
plants have a sectioned off area known as the screening
area. The screening area needs100% fresh air flow as
the screen process of PCBs generate acidic/dust/solvent
laden fumes.
The recommended conditions to be maintained within this
area is 50% RH at 70°F(20.11o).
Only the Ecofresh HRW's advanced
desiccant technology removes, airborne pollutants such
as carbon dioxide and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
At the same time it recovers sensible (heat) and latent
(moisture) energy.
The Ecofresh HRW is thus ideal
for recovering the waste energy from aircondition exhausts,
thereby cutting down operating costs without reducing
the fresh air flow.
...Watch
Case Buffing Shop
Watch cases are buffed after plating
or pressing, to remove all the blemishes occuring during
plating. Each case is buffed individually on-line. Every
buffing machine in the production line has a localised
supply of conditioned air which is exhausted at 74°F
and 55% RH leading to a large amount of energy loss with
the exhaust.
The Ecofresh HRW was found ideal
for recovering energy from the exhausted air, especially
since the exhaust air contained fine particles (about
20 microns in size) even after going through the cyclone
separator. The selective media, of the Ecofresh HRW
adsorbs only the moisture allowing dust particles to
flow out thus ensuring that cross contamination does
not take place.
